Remembering…
For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their reasonings, and their senseless hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools. Romans 1:21-22
Can you recall Cecil B Demille’s spoken introduction before the start of the movie “The Ten Commandments” premiering in 1956 - a short 68 years ago. It’s a not-too-old reminder of American society’s seven decades’ descent from America’s WW2 victorious triumphalism founded on dependence on God to Anglo-American idolatry based on materialistic prosperity and raw, unadulterated greed and pride. Here’s the key text and the video of Demille’s introduction:
“The theme of this picture is whether men ought to be ruled by God's law, or whether they are to be ruled by the whims of a dictator, like Rameses. Are men the property of the state or are they free souls under God? This same battle continues throughout the world today. Our intention was not to create a story, but to be worthy of a divinely inspired story, created 3,000 years ago, the five books of Moses.”
